Primary Health

Deepika Unnayan Sangstha was formed with the vision of bridging gaps in primary and maternal health care in Bagdumur village and its adjoining areas, where there was extreme inadequacy in accessing proper health facilities. Since its inception on 8 February 2015, DUS has worked fruitfully toward this very mission. Initiated impactful activities like free eye camps, indispensable eye checkups, and performed cataract operations, which aimed to touch the sore healthcare point for the underserved population. These annual eye camps offer an extremely strong anchor for the outreach initiatives of DUS in bringing crucial eye care to the needy.

Other than these specialized services, DUS has set up weekly medical camps where thousands of residents receive their first and oftentimes the only access to a doctor and some basic medications. These, supplemented by regular health checkups and awareness camps led by trained paramedics, are doing much for preventive care and early intervention. Moreover, being on the highway, DUS has treated many accident, hit-and-run, and other serious cases.

DUS conducts operations through the collation and analysis of health and demographic data. This helps it act fast in response to any emerging need in society and promptly establishes the impact of various interventions. Although the clinic and other services are open for all people, DUS targets its services toward the very poor, among whom women largely benefit by accessing key health services they would otherwise lack.

Looking ahead, for example, DUS foresees expansion of impact through innovative approaches like telemedicine interventions or extension of more extensive partnerships with hospitals and other relevant stakeholders. This strategic expansion would, in such a way, target more people in need by either scaling up existing activities or starting new projects that have been adequately assessed for current impact and future needs. The deep commitment and adaptive approach of Deepika Unnayan Sangstha to its goals have constituted it to be a shining example of health empowerment among underserved communities in Bangladesh.
